In The Third State, Follis has created an intellectual puzzler with such rich detail that it makes you feel what the character, Elliot, is experiencing. The tale quickly becomes suspenseful and even frightening. You will experience Elliott’s frustration and fear for him as he encounters the many roadblocks to his attaining the surveys he needs for his graduate studies. Once you begin reading you will have a difficult time putting it down. This reviewer is eagerly anticipating more books in the future from this author. Great first novel by author who is experienced in travel, fauna and flora, and, it would appear beer consumption. Great cast of characters that were well defined and easy to picture. Bravo Mr Follis. The first is an exploration inside the gridlocked psyche of Elliot Very, the protagonist, by his therapist while Elliot is trapped in an academic turf war. The second journey is to Elliot’s research project in Ecuador and includes a hallucinogenic trip in an Indian encampment. The Third State is also a story of friendships betrayed and scandals unmasked. The author, world traveler Mark Follis, describes the landscapes and cultures of Ecuador in such vivid color and detail that I was transported to Quito at 9,300 feet and to the site of Elliot’s troubled project in the Amazonian lowlands. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sunshine -- A refreshingly new plot by a new author : This is the first novel that I have taken the time to recommend, but I found The Third State to be a riveting page turner. The plot was not predictable as is the case with so many first novels. Take time to read the About This Book and About The Author sections before you begin. Mark Follis has a writing style that allowed me to easily identify with the main character and his frustrations and surprises as the plot unfolded. When I finished the book, I found that I had been educated as well as entertained and finally found a book that didn't leave me feeling that I had wasted my time. The Third State is a must read.
