I was completely drawn into the story and became attached to the vivid characters. The story explores what life feels like for people with dementia, and what the work of looking after them means to their underappreciated caregivers. The book sneaks up on you. It’s an engrossing story, but it’s also, well, philosophical. It’s about life and death, and what life means. I friend of mine recently said he didn’t see much point in a long life, and that life as a person with much reduced capacities wouldn’t seem worth living. I disagreed with my friend -- and the author, Diane Chiddister, clearly agrees with me. The dementia patients in her story have minds that have changed dramatically, but they very much still relish life. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from liz -- Inspirational and complex : This is a brave and wise novel, as the author reveals a complex universe within the vessel of a small Assisted Living organization. Here is a World. Here we find Love in its various guises; we find forgiveness, both for self and other; we find quirkiness, anxiety, coarseness, pain, revulsion, confusion, desire, regret, anger, humor, courage. We find resolution and on-goingness. We find compassion and tenderness overall, and I experienced self-recognition in aspects of almost every character. This is a well written novel which explores the complexity of the human condition in difficult circumstances. It is a brave novel because it does not pretend to offer simple answers, but does explore each character’s journey as they sort through their individual challenges as best they are able. Inspiring. I found myself cheering on the staff who strive to provide upbeat and compassionate care, despite the challenges. The characters are well developed and I shed tears feeling the yearning of the aged for their younger lives. I have a friend who was an administrator for a nursing home and a relative suffering from dementia who lives in a nursing home. The story and the people in the story all ring true. The characters sound like real people, with real lives, including good and bad decisions and the frailties we all share.
